Ava Jean Finished and general update.

I finally found some spare time to finish of painting my Ava Jean sculpt. This was just a practice piece and I'm pretty pleased with how she came out. The hands are arms are a bit of, but I've learned something and it's nice to have kicking around my workbench, everything else is sent out to friends or customers
Seven Zombie busts to make over the next month or so and some busts for work colleagues, that lot should keep me busy for a while.
I'm also setting a start date of the 01 Feb for the Chess pieces...I will make the time to get them started. Not too late to send in some pictures, if you want to be a part of it.

Zombie Groom Bust and Bride WIP

The Zombie busts of the couple pictured is progressing well. The Groom is pretty much done, just needs some touching up and final approval. The Bride will be made to a Bride of Frankenstein theme, so lots of stitches and a blue colour scheme. Another six busts or so after this two!.

I also picked up the book Pop Sculpture. Lot's of great tips and tricks for any level of sculptor and written in a light hearted fashion. I've only had a quick browse, but it's already to my mind the greatest book ever written and highly recommended.

If you've been following my blog you may be aware that I'm planning to make a Zombie versus survivor themed Chess Set. I've cleared a lot of work and I'm now looking to get things started. I need to make sixteen survivor mini busts with their opposing Zombified selves. I'll be keeping them pretty generic to avoid copyright issues, but I need a good mix of males a females and I'd also like a diverse mix of everyday people, including Police, Soldier, Nurse, Clown etc etc.

If you want to be made into a Zombie / survivor chess piece, you can email good clear posed pictures- front side and rear of yourself to me (head and shoulders) and I may use these for one of the sixteen subjects. No guarantees that this project will make it to production and their is no payment, only the chance to be immortalised as two chess pieces and maybe a copy of your sculpt - if it makes production. I'd also use the photographs to promote the set on this blog and beyond.

I'd rather use actual people than making something up and it's a good way to thank my blog readers. I'm also open to suggestion on how you want the sculpts to look.

There is also scope to make some other characters such as Santa, Uncle Sam etc as Specials for later release.

The sculpts will be head and shoulder busts only, as this will prevent any arms or props impeding game play.

Big Push for Xmas

Some of the latest pieces I'm working on. The Marine bust is a priority - as it needs to be posted tomorrow, so it gets delivered in time for Xmas.
The other two are for friends, the cartoon style statue is going to be a leaving present. He will be sporting a Welsh Rugby top and a pint of beer. The Ava Jean sculpt now has an arm, with another on the way, looking forward getting her painted.....okay time for bed, Phil sleepy now.

Eddie's Zombie Bust WIP and Halloween Hop

It's not quite Halloween yet, but close enough so Happy Halloween :)

I was hoping to get this sculpt finished for today but life conspired against me. I've pretty much finished the torso and head, a final highlight, finish the text on the back of the T and add the blood. I've left the hands off as they will obscure access to painting the T. I'll add them later using procreate, he will also be holding a comic book...Marvel Zombies of course.

It's Halloween Hop this weekend (link on the right), lots of great blogs to follow if you hit the link. I'm also going to be watching Evil Dead 2 this evening, as it's perfect for Halloween and tomorrow I'll be dressing up as a Zombie...what else. I also took the kids to see a Wicker Man getting burned down and eat lots of toffee apples, which started the festivities of nicely.

Zombie Bust from Candid Photo's

I'm making this bust using Candid photographs of the subject. The client said that he is a Marvel Zombies fan and these Zombies retain their intellect, which explains the grin on the bust. It still needs tweaking and final approval. I wanted this guy to be a bit past his sell by date, so lots of texturing. I've based the hat on an Indiana Jones type Fedora, not sure if it's right, but it can be adjusted, if it's okay I will bake then sand it smooth, as it's just too fiddly in it's soft state.
Once approved I'll add arms and the base... I really want to get painting this guy.

Four down and one more to go.....for now! The blue chap is my friend Jason Nagy, one of the biggest Zombie fans I know and I hope he likes what I did with him....maybe not the Tattoos, which were a nightmare, but maybe the Zombie Jason. The red has worked really well over the blue skin, might not look so great in the pictures, but take my word for it - it's cool. What ever happened to tattoos of anchors and having "Mum" written on your arm? It'd make my life a lot easier.

What better way to spend Sunday morning than painting Zombies? Nope I can't think of anything either. Lots of washes with different colour inks to make them look really infected and just Ewwwww. I can see a few areas that need tidying up, but these three are pretty much finished now, pending final approval from the subjects. Lots more busts to come :)

Thinking about a Zombie themed Chess Set?

I've got a lot to get on with just now, keeping me busy to around November. Once the dust has settled a bit I was planning some projects and I had a cunning idea!

What would you think of a Zombie themed chess set? I'm undecided on whether to have -

1) A traditional human side (King, Queen etc) and the other being their Zombified selves.

2) Modern day human survivors against Various Zombies.

3) Classic Zombie movie characters, with George Romero as the King, Tarman as Knight etc. Then Ash from Evil Dead , Tallahassee, Rick Grimes on the other side.

Would be interested in hearing what you think, is it something you would like to see - or should I just stick to the busts...maybe I could run a contest to get yourself made into a chess piece Zombies?

Busy painting just now and I'll be painting all weekend too. This is my chaotic work station, which is relegated to the attic and I love it. Plenty of pottering around goodness to be had, it's a happy place although the kids usually try and tidy it up then I can never find anything.

Zombie Wedding Cake Topper 2011

Just about finished :-) I'm waiting for the paint to dry on the veil, as it obscures the brides face slightly I'm posting pictures without it. To be honest the pictures don't do the sculpt justice, It looks a whole lot better in the flesh, damn my crappy photography.
I really enjoyed making this project, Christina and Jason were great to work with and I wish them the very best for the future. Now to pack it up and ship it out.

I've had a few weeks away from the Topper with work commitments etc, but I'm back on track and hopefully it will be finished over the next week or so. The bride will be painted as per the Corpse Bride movie. The groom will also be a lighter shade, I start with a darker base colour then work up to a lighter shade. Still have to finish their arms and detailing such as the glasses, flowers etc.

Rich requested that his Zombie bust would be holding a Playstation controller, hopefully I've conveyed the Zombie Rich prodding at the controller as it triggers faint memories?
I've only just finished painting and I'll review it again tomorrow, to touch up here and there. He originally asked for a blue hue to the skin, but with the blue jacket it could have been blue overload, so I went for a grey Zed and hopefully it'll meet Rich's approval. The plaid jacket also took forever to paint. I'm going to look at lots of non stripped things for a while now, just to rest my eyes.

This weeks offerings. I've had a lot of distractions, namely Siobhan's birthday and all you can eat Chinese - twice!. The Zombie bust is going well and as you can see he's holding a PlayStation controller. I'm itching to get this guy painted, the only part I'm dreading is his plaid jacket! lot's of careful straight lines and a steady hand.

The Zombie Groom is ready to be baked again, just need the approval of his suit, before starting the arms.

Just to make clear - the bust still has his left hand to make and a quick sanding. The groom has the legs of his glasses on his face, the rest will be added after the face is painted.

I've made a start on the Zombie Wedding Cake Toppers this week. The grooms legs are pretty much done and the remainder has been bulked out. Next I'll concentrate on his head then everything in between. The shoes will remain lacer-less until the painting is complete, as they are made from a two part putty which remains flexible, so they wont break too easily. Looking forward to painting this guy already.

I received this video from Vanessa several months ago, but I kind of forgot about it until today. She ordered a bust for her Fathers Christmas and kindly let me see the response. For me this is pure magic, all the time spent poking, prodding and painting is well spent if someone gets a thrill like this.
Even better - the busts will all come with arms now, for even more Zombie goodness.

Not really sure how they'll be received but I'm happy with the likeness, the photographs don't do the sculpts any justice - each sculpt is about 5" tall and painted with acrylic paints.

A bit more work on Kaya's sculpt. I've been trying to capture a likeness, so I'm waiting for approval. The hair is just blobs of clay, the next step is to textue it and finish of the ribbon on the corset. It's slow going as I still have a ton of busts to finish for work.

This lot are heading out to Z&T. I've had so much going on lately it was hard to find some time to get the Zombie Santa finished. It's also the third and last one I'm making......their may be a new sculpt nearer Christmas, as I have a lot of issues with this sculpt. But that's a while away yet. Next I'm starting some busts for friends I promised ages ago, not the work colleague ones, but two awesome ladies (who have been very patient), just hope I do them justice. More Zombie Fortune Cats

The mold I made for these guys will be heading over to Zombies and Toys, but I took the opportunity to paint up some of the test casts for examples. I still have two to paint, with one being a paint along. Pretty much a simple process of a flat base colour washed in ink then dry brushed, finally picking out the details. I used acrylic paint and good old Tamiya Clear Red - nothing better on the market for painting blood.

One down - six and a half to go! I'm making some busts for work colleagues who are leaving the service in May. This is the first of eight, I will be painting them with acrylic paints and then mounting them on a wooden plinth. The top lip looks a bit squiffy but I'm confident it will all look fine once I've painted him.

Well Martin has sent pictures of the painted Topper, which I was dying to see. The attention to detail and colour blending is incredible and Martin really brought these two to life..........well as much as you can bring a pair of Zombies to life. I'm particularly impressed with the Tattoo and the blood spatters, great work.

Back in July I posted some pics of a green man with Bunny Ears http://philscustomsculpts.blogspot.com./2010/07/its-got-ears.html . It now gives me great pleasure to present the finished piece.
It's only 34mm tall and made for my friend Martin Whitmore. It's made from a two part putty known as "greenstuff". Martin painted the sculpt and It has really made my day to see how it turned out.

Jodie's Zombie commission continues to take shape. His hands and base are pretty much all that's left to make. I know the variety of clays confuse the look of this sculpt. I use various of clays for their respective properties and repetitive baking darkens the parts I made previously.
Once the next bake is complete I can undercoat and start painting. I will be making the hands and accessories from a two part putty (procreate), which does not require baking - so next time I post pics of this guy, he will have a bit of colour.

Playing Catch Up

With a new oven installed, I can now get on with the full figure sculpts I've been commissioned to make. This is the first of four. A Zombie boyfriend, the boots and trousers are finished and I'm working the torso. I will be adding some rips and physical damage to the torso, then move onto the head, one arm will be reaching forward and the other hanging by his side. I'm really glad to be getting on with this sculpt - long live the new oven.

The Clown bust is starting to take shape. He will have a comic bow tie and Bowler Hat. Still not decided on what to put in his hands. My first idea was a knife or machete in the raised hand although I'm now thinking of the Bowler in his raised hand? Got to thank Andrea for her encouragement with this guy, he very nearly ended up as an unfinished head on my workbench.
The new oven is due to be delivered Monday so the full scale figures will be progressed next week.
Now to help carve Pumpkins with the kids..Happy Halloween.

Improvise and Overcome

Despite the lack of oven at the moment, which is seriously hampering any creativity. I had a cunning plan. It involved using the biggest pan we have on the gas hob and with the help of an oven thermometer - an improvised oven was born.
The first time I tried this I got an almighty rollocking from Mrs Hynes, for burning her pans. But she does go out on occasion - which is as good as permission in my book. I'm pretty limited to the size of sculpt I can fit into the pan, but Massimos magnet and the clown were both baked.
With the scorched pan safely concealed at the back of the cupboard I can now get on with the clown :-p

My Oven died :-(

After 10 years of sterling service, our oven decided to cook itself to death. With nothing more than a pop, a slight burning smell and too hot to touch, the beloved oven passed away. However a new one is on it's way, so my current projects are in temporary limbo. The armatures for the two full figure projects have been fleshed out a little and one Doctor Martin boot sculpted. I don't want to add more as the clay comes away from the wire underneath, very frustrating as I'm keen to get on with these two.
The clown has a cranium now, but needs baking before painting and I have a magnet to bake aswell.
I've also ordered a heap of clay and until the oven makes an appearance, I will be forced to spend my evenings watching TV and eating Takeaway food........ not all bad I suppose.

I Have A Plan

I have a couple of full figure sculpts in the pipeline and I'm eager to get started, but I've decided to start things of properly. Before I would knock up an armature and get stuck in straight away with the clay. This time I have made scaled sketches of the sculpts and I will work from these, which will hopefully stop any scale creep etc, well thats the plan and it's good to have a plan.

I have been commissioned to make two Evil Dead busts. The first is a Deadite Ash and the second a S Mart Ash. The sculpt shown is the start of the Deadite Ash.
I've wanted to make better use of the bases my sculpts stand on and this project provided the perfect opportunity. It made sense to have the Necronomicon make up the base for Deadite Ash, the only problem was I didn't want the book obscured by the bust, so I opted for making the bust forming from some evil ectoplasm stuff coming from the books eyes and mouth. Steel rods support the busts weight and so far so good. I hope to blend the paint so it looks like Ash is materialising form the book. Now for the head.....

Topper Sculpting is finished

This is as far as I'm taking these two. The sculpting is complete and an undercoat is applied. Now Martin Whitmore, the other half of Dead Ringers will be painting the Topper. Once he has finished I will post pictures of the completed Topper.
The "things" on the side of the males head are the legs of his glasses, the lens frames is a seperate piece and will be attached once the face is painted. Glasses have always been a pest to make and this approach seems the least traumatic.
The female does have one breast exposed, as requested - with a heart shaped nipple tassle. I 'm really looking forward to seeing what Martin does with this pair. I do know she has a red and black dress, the rest we will have to wait and see.

I decided to stick a mobile phone in his hand and remake the base. The base will have "Send more Cops!". My homage to The Return of the Living Dead where the Zombies use the radio to "Call more Cops" , fresh Zombie chow on demand. The figure still requires a lot more painting, only the base colours have been applied.

You may have noticed the rather good Title Banner on my Blog. This was made by the talented Martin Whitmore. If you would like Marty to make you a personalised banner, pop over to his site, the Dead Ringers link will take you to his site. This isn't the final item, some sculpts are going to be adorning the table, however I couldn't wait any longer, so used the sample as a temporary measure.

What about the Zombie? This guys about to get a lick of paint. I'm not sure what to put in his hand although a heart seems the most appropriate object. Not sure about the base either, might make a swamp base with the Zed half submerged in water. I'm also working on a big project, which will probably dominate this blog over the next few weeks, news on that soon.

The latest addition to the Zombie magnet project. The winning magnet is amongst those shown and will be announced soon at Zombies and Toys. I've really enjoyed making these and hopefully I will get the opportunity to make many more. Jason's still needs baking and painting, however I'm awaiting his approval before continuing.

I've finished three of the magnets from the photos supplied. They are about two inches high and painted with acrylic paint. Now I have to find some magnets. Now I've seen the photos I need to do some touching up. Second batch coming soon.

I've started work on some of the Zombie Magnet prototypes. These still require tweaking, but it's a start. The biggest difficulty is making a sculpt from only one photograph, ideally I would like a profile shot as well, but so far I'm happy with the results. The eyes are metal ballbearings so the reflections look weird. Looking forward to making a whole bunch and getting them painted.

I converted Freds sculpt by cutting his head off, then resculpting the neck with Procreate. I also revisited the ears and added more skin to some of the scalp wounds. Hopefully he may be available to buy as a keyring or similar.

I'm really wanting to start painting this piece, only the hands and furry cuffs left on the main figure. Once this is done I have to make the sack and base. Think I'm going to start painting him now anyway, I can make the hands and cuffs from procreate, so no more baking for this guy.

I've been working on the head and left arm the last few evenings. I'm looking forward to making his hat, but not so the left hand, it's a bit tight for space so I will have a good ponder about that. I've also decided on making a sack full of presents, just as you would expect. Hmmmm.....more beard is in order as well.

Cake Topper for my friends, Dean is at an oblique angle in the photo, so he appears shorter than Sharon. Still some bits to touch up, add flowers etc etc.

Work on the left arm continues, or rather his hand. Two more fidly fingers left to make. This is the clay prototype. I will cast the arm in resin, then add it to the painted version.
